Safety and Travel Tips for Women Travelers
Contrary to what the media and certain
governments would like us to believe, the
world is still a relatively safe place.  That
doesn't mean you shouldn't arm yourself with
knowledge to help protect and empower you
while traveling.  Female travelers especially
are more likely to be targets of unwanted
sexual advances, groping, inappropriate
comments or "eve teasing" as it is called in
India, and unfortunately even rape.  Whatever
you do, though, don't let this stop you from
enjoying what could be some of the most
enjoyable times of your life.
1.  Always be aware of your surroundings.

2.  Leave your jewelry at home.  Consider wearing a wedding ring if you are single.

3.  Dress conservatively.  Don't bring shorts, tank tops, or short skirts.  Consider buying what local
women wear, namely the kurta pyjama which consists of a long, loose-fitting tunic worn over baggy
pants.

4.  Don't trust every clean cut, honest-looking stranger or children.

5.  If you must ask for directions approach families or women.  To be extra safe say, "Where is
_________ ?  I'm meeting my husband there."

6.  On sidewalks, keep your handbag and other valuables away from the street side (and on
escalators, away from the opposite ramp)

7.  Have your room key out when you leave the elevator.

8.  The door of your hotel room should have double locks and a peephole.  Bring along a security
doorstop for added protection.

9.  Put your more expensive clothing on hangers under other garments.

10.  Have gratuities ready for porters and doormen.

11.  Make sure your door closes securely and the deadbolt works.

12.  Ask for a room on a higher floor near the elevator but away from emergency exists, stairwells,
and any renovation work.

13.  Never accept a room if the clerk loudly calls out your name and room number.

14.  If arriving late, explore your transportation options in advance.

15.  If you arrive late at night, ask a member of the staff to escort you to your room.

16.  If driving, do not pull over when a someone drives alongside of you pointing at your car
pretending something is wrong.

17.  If you are attacked, run, fight, and yell as loud as possible.
